| The
Meran-Sterzing (Merano-Vipiteno) region
is located in the far north of Italy. Sterzing is close to the Austrian border (Brenner). The best way to get from Meran to Sterzing is to use the Jaufenpass road (Passo del Monte Giovo) and you will see some of the falls below. The picture on the left above shows the sunken tower of Graun, west of Meran at the Reschenpass (Passo di Resia) in the Reschensee (Lago di Resia). All pictures there shot in August 2002. Click on pictures to see the falls in a bigger size. |
| The
Partschinser fall is located a few kilometers
west of Meran in the small village of Partschins.
The fall can be seen from the main highway. A very small, windy, steep and narrow road leads close to the parking area. The hike takes only a few minutes up to the fall. The fall is known as the highest in Südtirol (Alto Adige), height is 97 meters. The Passeirer waterfall is located on the road from Meran to St.Martin in Passeier (S. Martino in Passiria). Look for a sign to the fall from the main highway at Glamitz, not easy to see. From the parking area it's only about 10 minutes to the falls overlook. Height is 48 meters. The Stieber waterfall is located in Moos in Passeier (Moso in Passiria), west of St.Leonhard in Passeier (S. Leonardo in Passiria). The fall can be seen from the main road, easiest access is to drive westbound to Pfelders, after a few kilometers you will see the sign to the waterfall. The trail takes you down to the falls overlook, about 10 minutes down and 20 minutes back as the trail is very steep. The height of the fall is about 35 meters in total. The Kograben and Gansörbach waterfalls are located in the Pflerscher valley (Val di Fleres). At the end of the road in St.Anton (S. Antonio) starts the trail to the waterfall Hölle, you can see the Gansörbach waterfall from distance, as the fall had very less waterflow i didn't get closer. The Kograben waterfall can be reached at the trail up to Mount Pflerscher Tribulaun, about 20 minutes from the village of St. Anton. Kograben waterfall (visible) is about 40 to 50 meters high. The trail to the Hölle waterfall (waterfall's hell) is easy and takes about 1 hour one way. The fall is about 40 to 50 meters high. |
| The
Gilfenklamm is one of the best known tourist
attractions in the region and well visited all day. The canyon is located a few kilometers west of Sterzing in Ratschings (Racines) and can't be missed. Plan about 2 to 3 hours for the hike thru the canyon. There are several small waterfalls in the canyon, the most impressive is the fall on the left above with about 15 meters height. |
